SCID Design Research Center

The SCID Design Research Center (DRC), located within the campus, serves as a dynamic innovation hub for aspiring Industrial Designers. The center focuses on research, design, and prototype development for various automotive projects. This hands-on, experiential learning environment allows students to actively engage in real-world industrial processes while pursuing their academic degrees, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

The DRC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emote Electric. Emote’s Founder and Managing Director, Pranav Singanapalli, a postgraduate from Northumbria University (UK), has established a fully functional workshop on campus. With growing concerns over noise pollution and the environmental impact of fuel-based vehicles, Pranav and his team, comprising enthusiastic industrial designers from SCID, are dedicated to creating solutions that are both economically viable and environmentally sustainable.

One of their landmark achievements is SURGE, India’s first geared electric bike, developed as part of this collaborative initiative.

World Design Organization

The Creative Institute of Design has applied for membership with the World Design Organization (WDO) to establish a strong global presence and create outstanding opportunities for aspiring designers in India.

The WDO holds United Nations Special Consultative Status, empowering it to promote change, lead global initiatives, and support the advancement of industrial design worldwide. With a presence in over 40 countries, comprising 170 organizations and a network of 150,000 professional designers, WDO plays a vital role in shaping the future of design.

As the world’s leading design authority, WDO offers students the opportunity to showcase their work on a global platform through its student wing, allowing them to compete and collaborate with fellow design students internationally.

Recognizing SCID’s dedication to design excellence, the WDO has invited our Director, Prof. Balaram Singanapalli, to enroll students in key global competitions such as the World Design Impact Prize and the Trophy Competition, giving them invaluable exposure to the international design community.

  • WHY STUDY DESIGN AT SCID?
  • WHY STUDY DESIGN

The Creative Institute of Design (SCID), also known as Sasi Creative Institute of Design, is one of the country’s premier design institutions and among the few private multidisciplinary centers for creative studies in Tamil Nadu.

SCID maintains an impressive faculty-to-student ratio of 1:8, allowing for individual attention, mentorship, and holistic development. Our faculty members come from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, having graduated from some of the most prestigious institutions such as NID, NIFT, IIT, CEPT, and top international universities.

SCID students consistently achieve top ranks in university examinations, a testament to the academic rigor and quality of our programs.

At Creative Colleges, we emphasize the development of each student’s analytical skills and creative thinking, ensuring they are prepared to adapt and thrive in any future market scenario. Our focus is on creating future-proof professionals who are ready to take on global design challenges.

In 2020, SCID signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Birmingham City University, UK, opening doors to student and faculty exchange, study abroad opportunities, credit transfers, research collaborations, and more. We’ve also established partnerships with BITS, UAE, and offer certified program participation at the National University of Singapore (NUS). These international collaborations provide students with world-class content and exposure to global industry practices, offering an unmatched academic experience.

Our campus is equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure. The library houses over 4,000 books, including 1,000 international titles and journals. Our workshop lab features state-of-the-art tools such as a weather station, laser cutter, 3D printer, advanced laser printer, and 10 imported Bosch machines. This makes SCID one of the top institutions for hands-on learning in India.

We also host national and international-level design conferences and workshops. In 2020, we organized the ‘AnD Conclave’, an architecture and design event focused on exploring how creative professions shape humanity. The conclave featured some of the most distinguished minds in design and architecture from across the country.

SCID is also committed to advancing design thinking through design publishing, which remains a critical need in India. Our first publication, “Design Values”, launched in 2020, was a collaborative project between a senior professor and a graduating student, combining rich academic insight with creative execution.

Design in India has evolved significantly. It has grown from simply enhancing the appearance of a product or service to becoming a core business strategy that drives growth and development. Today, design plays an important role in shaping infrastructure, improving lifestyles, addressing socio-cultural challenges, transforming education, and promoting literacy. The possibilities are endless.

Design education is now a powerful tool for developing products and services that bring meaningful value to people’s lives. What was once seen as a visual or marketing function is now increasingly viewed as a strategic process that businesses and startups are embracing.

Globally, there is a growing trend of investing in research-driven and strategic design faculties. The focus is on user-centric design that creates experiences and solutions entirely around the end user. Modern design is intuitive, interactive, multi-sensorial, and accessible. It drives innovation with real impact and gives businesses a competitive advantage.

Some of the most successful companies in the world such as Apple, Google, and Amazon have shown how design thinking can shape leadership and success. These companies represent the transformative power of design not only as form but also as function, experience, and identity.

Today’s students are more globally aware than ever before. They are actively engaged with international design trends and contribute thoughtful perspectives to the conversation on innovation. Unlike earlier generations, they intuitively recognize high-quality design. They are deeply rooted in their own culture while selectively absorbing global design influences, allowing them to blend tradition and modernity in meaningful ways.

For any student who aspires to create a company like Apple, design knowledge is the essential foundation. It unlocks creativity, nurtures vision, and empowers them to lead change through innovation.
